A special holiday on December 5 is Prokopiev Day: history, traditions, omens
In the national calendar, the date of December 5 is known as Prokopiev Day or Prokopiy Winter Day. The holiday symbolized the final onset of winter and the establishment of the tobogganing route. Traditionally, it was accompanied by various rituals and household chores related to the preparation for the long winter season. In 2025, the celebration falls on a Friday. Izvestia tells about the customs, signs and prohibitions of this day.
What is the church holiday on December 5th?
In the Orthodox tradition, on December 5 (November 22, Old style), the memory of the holy Martyr Procopius of Caesarea (Palestine), who lived in Jerusalem in the III century, is celebrated. Procopius served as a reader in the Caesarean Church and was engaged in translating the Holy Scriptures.
He was known as a zealous preacher of the Word of God, as well as a miracle worker. According to his life, the saint could heal the seriously ill and demon-possessed with the power of prayer. During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian in 303, Procopius was captured, tortured and executed for refusing to renounce the faith and sacrifice to idols.
The Church honors him as one of the first martyrs to suffer for Christianity. However, in the popular consciousness, the name of the saint became firmly rooted with the onset of winter and the construction of winter roads, which was reflected in the name of the holiday — Prokopy winter.
Traditions of the national holiday Prokopiev day on December 5th
Prokopiev Day served as an important milestone, completing the autumn business and opening the winter season. The main tradition of the day was connected with roads. In the villages, men gathered together and went out "to dig" — they laid and rolled the first winter roads, clearing the way to neighboring villages.
It was believed that from that time on, the paved road would last until spring. The people said: "The Digger came, dug a snowdrift, steps on the snow, digs the road." The installation of road milestones was also of particular importance. This was the name given to tall stakes with a bundle of straw or rags, which were stuck along the roads so that travelers would not lose their way during a snowstorm.
From Prokopiev Day, the winter fairs season also traditionally opened, where peasants carried their goods on sleds. Therefore, in parallel with the construction of roads, peasants made new sleds or repaired old ones. Attention was also paid to other winter tasks, such as harvesting firewood, repairing equipment, and caring for livestock in stables.
After the day's work, the evening was devoted to rest: they arranged gatherings with lenten treats (the day falls on the Christmas Fast) and shared heartfelt stories. It was also customary to engage in charity work. In memory of the holy martyr, it was supposed to give alms and distribute unnecessary clothes to those in need. It was believed that being stingy on this day could bring need to the house.
What not to do on December 5 on Prokopiev Day
On Prokopiev Day, as on other holidays, there were strict prohibitions. According to legend, violating these rules could scare away luck at the beginning of an important winter season or anger the patron saint of the day. They especially strictly monitored the atmosphere in the house, avoiding any negativity that could attract trouble. They also tried not to commit actions that could harm family well-being. For example, it was forbidden to lend money, flour or salt — this promised to be in need next year.
What else can't be done on December 5th:
- leaving guests overnight or spending the night outside the house yourself can "take over" other people's troubles.;
- starting new important things (repairs, relocation, job change) — the undertaking will not be crowned with success;
- Looking into the other person's eyes for a long time leads to conflict with this person.;
- Drinking alcohol, especially in large quantities, was believed to attract evil spirits who could stay with a person for a long time.;
- to give fresh flowers — such a gift foreshadowed the "fading" of joy in the house.
Folk signs for December 5th
Observing natural phenomena, the peasants made forecasts for the coming winter and the future harvest. Many of them were of practical importance, helping to prepare for severe frosts. So, if the birds had brought a lot of fluff and feathers into their nests, they were preparing for a harsh winter. And if it was warm on Prokopiev day, then we expected that the winter would be long and snowy.
Other signs of the day:
- Heavy snowfall began, leading to a cold, frosty winter;
- The bullfinch began to sing — a blizzard or snowstorm is about to begin.
- dim reddish rings are visible around the moon, which is a sign of early frosts.;
- clear weather on December 5 — early spring;
- frost on the trees in the morning — for a good harvest next year.
