The states of the European Union (EU) have adopted a preliminary agreement to ban the import of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). This was announced on December 3 on the website of the Council of the European Union.

"Today, the presidency of the Council and representatives of the European Parliament have reached a preliminary agreement on the regulations on the phased cessation of imports of Russian natural gas," the publication says.

In addition, the ban will affect pipeline gas from the Russian Federation. According to the press release, the total ban will come into force by the end of 2026. It is specified that the ban on the import of pipeline gas will take effect in the autumn of 2027.

The article also noted that the ban on long—term LNG supply contracts will come into force from the beginning of January 2027, and on pipeline gas from September 30 of the same year.

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said on November 26 that Ankara was not going to stop buying gas from Moscow, as Russia has always been and remains a reliable supplier of fuel. He noted that Turkey had no reason to worry, so the country is making gas purchases as usual.
