Many people have a habit of shaking their leg while sitting at a table. This usually does not cause discomfort or cause concern, but sometimes it can be a marker of certain health problems. Marianna Dzhikiya, a neurologist at the SM Clinic, told about this on December 3.

"One of these problems may be restless legs syndrome (RLS), a neurological disorder whose main difference is unpleasant sensations in the legs <...> that cause an irresistible desire to move the legs. These symptoms appear or worsen at rest, weaken when moving, and are most pronounced in the evening and at night," she told Gazeta.Ru»

The neurologist claims that these involuntary movements can have a variety of causes: they can be roughly divided into psychological and physiological. The doctor especially highlights stress and anxiety — foot movement helps to relieve muscle tension and reduce cortisol levels, as well as helps to concentrate on the task. In addition, the habit of shaking your leg can be formed due to a lack of movement. According to the doctor, prolonged sedentary work worsens blood flow in the extremities and pelvis, and shaking your leg instead of a full-fledged workout eliminates the need to get up from your seat.

"Another possible reason is an excess of caffeine, which, like other stimulants, can increase nervous excitement, muscle tremors and feelings of anxiety, which involuntarily leads to such movements. In addition, monotonous movement helps the brain to switch from anxious thoughts and calm the nervous system, so the body tries to help itself," Jikiya added.

Nevertheless, the doctor warns: in some cases, the habit may be a health problem that requires treatment. According to the neurologist, in some cases, such movements may be associated with manifestations of Tourette's syndrome, restless legs syndrome, or certain types of tremors.

The neurologist advises to pay attention to the situation in which the unconscious shaking of the leg begins. It's important to find the root cause: you've had a lot of coffee, you're feeling anxious, or you just stayed in place too long. The doctor also urges you to regularly practice physical activity aimed at relaxation. Stretching, short walks and gymnastics will help relieve tension and reduce anxiety. In addition, the specialist notes the importance of controlling the amount of caffeine consumed daily: it is worth reducing the number of drinks consumed such as coffee, strong tea and energy drinks. Finally, the doctor suggests distracting yourself with another habit. You can use tactile distractions, such as anti-stress toys.

"In most cases, the habit of shaking your leg is a harmless way of self—regulation of the body <...>. You should consult a neurologist when you notice unpleasant sensations in your legs that force you to move, and if the symptoms are especially severe in the evening and prevent you from falling asleep," Jikiya summarized.

On the International Day of the Neurologist, December 1, Polina Lepilova, a neurologist at the Sberbank Health medical company, named five non-obvious reasons for contacting a specialist in this field. Some of them can cause chronic back pain, headaches, and panic attacks.
