- The Colombian president warned the United States about recognizing the strikes as a declaration of war
U.S. attacks on ground targets in Colombia would mean a declaration of war. This was announced on December 2 by Colombian President Gustavo Petro.
"I'll show you (US President Donald Trump. — Ed.), how they are destroyed — one drug lab every 40 minutes. But do not threaten our sovereignty, otherwise you will wake up the Jaguar. An attack on our sovereignty is a declaration of war," the publication says in X (ex. Twitter).
Petro noted that he does not want to interrupt the two-century-old diplomatic relations with the United States.
The Brazilian portal UOL reported on November 14 that Latin American states are considering the possibility of preparing a joint declaration condemning the US aggression against Venezuela. Brazil, Colombia and Mexico participated in the drafting of the potential application.
Prior to that, on October 20, Trump said he believed Petro was involved in getting the drug situation in Colombia "out of control." He called the Colombian leader crazy and said that Washington was not going to put up with the alleged mass production and export of cocaine.
