The psychologist explained the frequent desire to change the car
Svetlana Pulya, a psychologist at the SM Clinic Medical Center, explained why many drivers change cars every four to five years.
In an interview with Auto Mail on Tuesday, December 2, the specialist explained that it's not a matter of habit or love for new things, but the work of the dopamine system. When a person buys a new car, the brain reacts by releasing dopamine, a pleasure neurotransmitter. However, the effect quickly passes, and the owner ceases to feel the previous "wow effect".
The doctor explained that after a few years, the car no longer causes emotions, and a person strives to regain a sense of novelty, getting into a kind of shopping cycle. Such a mechanism, she says, may resemble addiction: the brain increasingly requires updates. This is especially evident in people with high incomes, impulsivity, or a tendency to buy things "out of boredom" and stress.
Sometimes the craving for new cars is associated with the desire to strengthen social status or maintain the image of a successful person. A new car increases self-esteem, but the effect is short-lived. For some, buying replaces the feeling of youth: a fresh car is associated with renewal and getting rid of the feeling of aging.
The psychologist stressed that by changing cars every few years, a person risks becoming a "hostage of dopamine", constantly dissatisfied with what he has. She noted that if the brain requires dopamine, you need to give it, but not with a new car.
The doctor advises getting pleasure through other sources — completed tasks, new experiences, communication, physical activity and creativity. These methods activate dopamine without major expenses and help to get out of the vicious cycle of constant purchases.
Psychologist Elena Rusakova said on November 25 that often the desire to buy a luxury car is perceived as a symbol of success, status and wealth, writes RT.
Meanwhile, psychologist Olga Tvardovskaya said on November 6 that buying a car has a positive effect on a woman's overall hormonal background and can lead to a decrease in the body's levels of the stress hormone cortisol. The expert noted that buying a car helps women shift their attention from their own experiences to something external and thereby distract themselves from self-obsession.
Pravda.Ru On October 31, I wrote that bright cars — red, yellow, green, orange — immediately attract attention, highlighting the owner in the stream and giving him personality. Psychologists believe that such cars enhance confidence and make driving more emotional: red is associated with energy, yellow — with positivity, green — with calmness, orange — with cheerfulness. In addition to aesthetics, it's also a matter of safety — a noticeable car is easier to see on the road.
In July, clinical psychologist Olga Umanova said that aggressive motorists can cause serious accidents, so it is important to be able to identify them in time. Such drivers are given out by sudden maneuvers, driving with "checkers", clipping, frequent changes of lanes, ignoring the rules, high speed, close following, notes 360.ru . She also recommended to be especially careful when meeting with a motorist in a dirty car with mechanical damage, writes "Moscow 24".
In April, psychologist and psychotherapist Sergey Lvovsky said that the refusal of some motorists to use turn signals before making a maneuver was due to aggression. Aggression in this case is a defense mechanism against depression.
