The North group of forces has been tasked with creating a security zone on the border with Ukraine. This was announced on November 30 by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"I have asked you (Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov), among other things, to report on the situation in the North group's area of responsibility, bearing in mind that it is tasked with creating a security zone along the state border," the head of state said during a visit to one of the command posts of the United Group of Forces.
