Folk signs for December 2: what can and cannot be done
In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of Tuesday, December 2, and what church holidays are celebrated on this day.
Folk signs for December 2, 2025
In Russia, on December 2, the Avdey Radetel holiday was celebrated. According to popular beliefs, from that day on, a period began when life seemed to freeze and concentrate inside the hut. The main task was to protect the home from dark forces, which, according to the ancestors, became more active in the cold, trying to get into the house, closer to the warmth.
The main rite of the day was the ritual "locking up" of the house. The head of the family walked around all corners, tapping on door jambs, window frames and thresholds with the butt of an axe. This sound, according to legend, created an invisible barrier for evil spirits. And to protect themselves from colds, they drank hot sbiten, a drink made from herbs, honey and spices, which not only warmed, but also drove out the disease.
Great importance was attached to weather signs. They helped predict the nature of winter and plan household chores. For example, it was believed that whatever the weather was on Avdey, it would be like this throughout December. A clear day foreshadowed a frosty month, an overcast one — mild and warm. If a thick snow cover formed on the ground, it was a good sign for the future harvest.
Other signs of the day:
- snowfall with strong winds leads to a prolonged and cold winter;
- the moon is in a foggy circle — wait for a strong blizzard and snowstorms;
- the cow sticks her nose out of the manger and breathes frequently — to a change in the weather, more often to warming;
- the cattle butt heads and worry in the barn — for bad weather;
- The sparrows are chirping loudly — it's going to snow soon.
What not to do on December 2nd
There was a strict code of prohibitions against Avdey the Guardian. Our ancestors believed that breaking these rules could attract evil spirits, bring on poverty or disease. Quarrels and conflicts between household members were seen as a particular danger. Such manifestations, as was believed in the old days, destroyed the protective aura of the family hearth and made it vulnerable. Therefore, they tried to avoid any disagreements on the holiday, so as not to disturb the peace in the family.
What else can't be done on December 2nd:
- Being lazy and leaving a mess in the house is believed to attract dark forces and promise a hectic year.;
- Keep the door open — family well-being can leave the house through it.;
- Going out on the street unnecessarily can get you into trouble or meet with an ill—wisher.;
- Going on a long journey promises misfortunes and insurmountable obstacles.;
- throwing away leftovers promises the loss of family wealth, crumbs should be given to birds or livestock.
What is the church holiday on December 2nd?
On December 2, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of one of the twelve minor biblical prophets, Saint Obadiah. He lived in the 9th century BC and served as a housekeeper at the court of the wicked Israeli king Ahab. Despite his corrupt environment, Obadiah retained his righteousness and firm faith in the one God. He secretly, at the risk of his life, helped the persecuted prophets, hiding them in caves from persecution.
The Prophet Obadiah is considered the author of the shortest book of the Old Testament, consisting of only one chapter. In it, he menacingly denounces the pride and cruelty of the enemies of the Israeli people and predicts Divine retribution for them. The key idea of his prophecy is the triumph of justice and the justice of God. In Russia, the prophet was deeply revered, seeing in him an example of steadfastness of faith and concern for the persecuted, and they gave him the name of the Guardian — that is, "one who diligently cares for others."
Also on this day, a holiday is celebrated in honor of the miraculous icon of the Mother of God "In sorrow and sorrow Consolation." According to legend, the shrine belonged to Patriarch Athanasius III of Constantinople. After his death, the image was kept in the Athos monastery of Vatopedi, and in 1849 it was solemnly transferred to the newly formed Russian St. Andrew's Skete. The rector of the skete, blessing the brethren, said: "May this icon be a joy and comfort to you in your sorrows and sorrows." These words gave the name to the shrine.
The icon is a fold with a unique iconography. In the center there is a picture of the Mother of God with the Christ Child, who are preceded by John the Baptist and John the Theologian. Images of the Great Martyrs George the Victorious and Demetrius of Thessalonica, as well as Saints Nicholas the Wonderworker, Spyridon of Trimifunt and several venerable saints are placed on the doors and in the lower part of the image. The composition symbolizes the comprehensive prayerful support that believers receive through the Mother of God and the saints.
