The Japanese government is determined to resolve the issue of ownership of the Kuril Islands and conclude a peace treaty with Russia. This was announced on December 1 by the head of the Japanese Foreign Ministry, Toshimitsu Motegi.

"Relations between Japan and Russia are in difficult conditions, but the course towards resolving the issue of the ownership of the "four northern islands" (the southern part of the Kuril Islands) remains unchanged. — Ed.) and the conclusion of a peace treaty," the Reuters news agency quoted him as saying.

It is noted that before this, the mayor of Namuro handed over to the head of the department a letter demanding a solution to the problem of belonging to the islands.

The territorial dispute between Russia and Japan over the southern Kuril Islands, not counting Urup Island, has remained unresolved since the end of World War II. Tokyo includes them in the Hokkaido Prefecture, while Moscow considers legitimate sovereignty over these territories. The parties have not yet concluded a peace treaty, adds "Газета.ги ".

Earlier, on October 24, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, in her keynote speech in parliament on the occasion of taking office, said that the Japanese government was determined to conclude a peace treaty with Russia, despite the difficult situation in bilateral relations.
