Female students are three times ahead of students in terms of investment returns
The income of female students in investments is 3 times higher than that of students. These conclusions were reached by analysts of the investment Research laboratory of the Central University and T-Investments analyzed the investment activity of more than 211 thousand students from 430 Russian universities in 10 months of 2025.
The study showed that young men make transactions more intensively. There are an average of 20 transactions per student per year, which is 4 times more than female students who make 5 transactions over the same period. In the category of actively investing students, boys make an average of 72 transactions, while girls make 19.
Boys are more actively investing: if on average there are about 41% of girls among student investors, then the proportion of female students among those who actively invest is already decreasing to 38%.
Young people also manage amounts that are on average 5-6 times higher than the portfolios of girls. However, actively investing girls are more successful than young people: their profitability is 3 times higher. At the same time, female students make 4 times fewer transactions than boys. The trend is explained by the fact that female students are more likely to choose instruments with fixed or projected returns.
According to the study, students from Izhevsk State Technical University named after M. T. Kalashnikov showed the highest profitability in 2025 (139%).
The Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation is in second place in terms of profitability, and Kemerovo State University is in third place.
In general, the most successful student investors have managed to increase their capital significantly over the past year. So the leader from St. Petersburg showed a yield of 373%. In second place is a student from Tula with a return of 268%. In third place is a young investor from Moscow with a score of 161%.
Among investment instruments, Russian stocks are in the first place in popularity among students. They occupy 38% of the portfolios of students and 33% of female students. Interestingly, the Central Bank's research shows that the share of listed shares in all investments in financial market instruments is about 32%.
Funds are next in popularity: 32% in the portfolios of boys and 37% in the portfolios of girls. This reflects the tendency of female students to choose more diversified and collective tools more often.
The third most popular instrument is Russian bonds. They occupy 22% of the portfolios of students and 25% of female students.
"Female students had a lower share of stocks because they preferred bonds and funds a little more often. The choice of bonds may be a reflection of their preference for instruments with more predictable, fixed returns (we see this in the portfolios of women investors of all ages). But it should be noted that the bonds were an excellent choice for the previous year," explained Sofya Donets, chief economist at T-Investments.
Active investments in funds are also welcome. Funds are a broad concept, they can be for stocks, bonds, and the money market. What unites them is that they will provide us with expertise and management from professional market participants, as well as the opportunity to invest in a wide market, with many assets at once. This can be very sensible, especially in a volatile market."
