- VTsIOM reported on the possible disappearance of cities due to the outflow of population
In Russia, small towns may disappear due to the outflow of people to large cities. VTsIOM announced this in its report on December 1.
"Hundreds of small and single-industry towns in Russia may eventually disappear from the map of Russia due to the active outflow of population. Young people are leaving the city, the older generation is inevitably declining, new residents are not coming, the total number of households is decreasing from year to year," the TASS news agency quoted the report.
It is noted that there is not only one reason for this process. In addition to the difficulty of making money in small towns, infrastructure is underdeveloped, and there are significant limitations to educational and career opportunities. According to VTsIOM, more than a third of Russian youth feel constrained in small towns.
In addition, the analysis of urban urbanization in the Russian Federation suggests that from 1950 to 2030, the population outside cities will decrease by 36%, and the population in cities with a population of half a million people will grow by 25%.
The outflow of population is also influenced by the work of state institutions at the local, regional and federal levels.
VTSIOM suggests the development of tourism in small towns as one of the options for preserving them.
