On November 30, young Russian chess players returned to Moscow, having won 14 medals in Bangkok at the Asian championships among boys and girls under 8-14 years old, as well as boys and girls under 16-18 years old. The guys shared their impressions of the competition.

"I really enjoyed the competition, I played it well, and I was very pleased with the result. I remember most of all how I had a draw in the last round, and the opponent suggested it himself. I agreed and went to celebrate the first place," Gleb Shcheglov, the winner of the championship, told Izvestia.

Now the young chess player plans to fulfill two more standards of the master of sports and play for the master at the international level.

14-year-old Alexander Fedosov took silver in the rapid chess championship among athletes under 18 years of age. He noted that he didn't play quite in his age group, but that didn't stop him from conceding just one point to the winner.

Mikhail Demidov, coach of the Russian youth chess team, said that the guys have been preparing for tournaments all year, but before a certain game there is a deeper study of certain moves.

Artem Pugachev, the head of the sports team, added that since it is in Asia that the entire strength of the chess game is concentrated, Russian chess players have to compete with the strongest and face great competition.

"I think our guys performed brilliantly, won the team competition. <...> It's a great success for us that we can finally compete in the team competition, and not just individually," said Pugachev.

Earlier, on November 25, it was reported that chess player Andrey Esipenko won the bronze World Chess Cup and qualified for the candidates tournament. Esipenko won with black pieces in the match for the third place at the World Cup, beating the representative of Uzbekistan Nodirbek Yakubboev. The day before, he had defeated his opponent by playing with white pieces. It was noted that Esipenko became the sixth participant in the candidates tournament, the winner of which will receive the right to play in the match for the chess crown.
