- The Guardian reported the closure of more than 2.1 thousand pubs in Ireland due to the crisis
Traditional pubs in Ireland are experiencing a serious crisis due to high taxes on alcohol and a decrease in alcohol consumption. This was reported on November 30 by The Guardian newspaper.
"Irish pubs are in trouble. They are disappearing from rural Ireland, and many of them have to struggle to survive in the capital," the publication says.
The newspaper notes that pubs remain an important part of Irish culture. They appear in films and books, attract tourists and inspire the discovery of analogues around the world.
Since 2005, more than 2.1 thousand pubs have closed in the country, which is an average of 112 closures per year. The publication emphasizes that this is not just an economic loss — pubs play a key role in social and cultural life, being a center of communication, a place of leisure and expression of Irish traditions.
"Even if pubs are falling into disrepair, they are still a part of everyday life. If they disappear, it will be a real loss," the newspaper quotes Perry Sher, who is co—editor of the Irish Pub study.
He notes that alternatives like coffee shops do not replace the atmosphere and spirit of pubs, and their disappearance threatens social cohesion and a sense of community in villages and towns.
It clarifies that the global trend of closing traditional bars is also observed in the UK, most of Europe and Asia, but it is especially sensitive for Ireland because of the historical and cultural value of pubs.
"Our society is becoming more segmented, and it's important that such places allow people to communicate across classes and generations," adds Cher.
The publication also says that now just over half of the Irish population lives within 300 m of the remaining about 7 thousand pubs, which continue to be centers of cultural life and inspiration for literature and cinema.
Earlier, on January 27, it was reported that a pub that had been operating for 460 years had closed in the county of North Yorkshire in the north of England. It is noted that the institution was opened in 1564, when Queen Elizabeth I ruled the country.
