A lost Rubens painting was sold for 2.3 million euros at an auction in France.
A painting by Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens, "Christ on the Cross," which was considered lost for more than 400 years, was sold at the Osenat auction in Versailles near Paris for €2.3 million. This was reported on November 30 by the newspaper Le Parisien.
"On Sunday, Peter Paul Rubens' "Christ on the Cross" was sold at auction in front of a crowded hall at the Osenat house in Versailles for €2.3 million, <...> for €2.9 million, including commission," the publication says.
The lot was estimated at €1-2 million, and the starting price was €500 thousand. The buyer's name has not yet been disclosed.
Earlier, on September 10, the Franceinfo TV channel reported that Rubens' painting "Christ on the Cross" was accidentally discovered in one of the mansions in Paris. The masterpiece, which is believed to have been created in 1613, was found by French auctioneer Jean-Pierre Osen, who is the director of the Osenat auction house, back in September 2024.
