The Daily Mail reported a reduction in payments in Scotland for refugee accommodation
Scottish authorities have warned that Ukrainian refugees may become homeless after the cancellation of payments to local residents who sheltered them. This was reported on November 29 by the Daily Mail newspaper.
"The Scottish government has informed local authorities <...> that the provision of funding to help Ukrainians settle down will not continue," the publication says.
According to the newspaper, about 28,000 Ukrainians have found refuge in Scotland since the beginning of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Previously, the conservative government paid British families 500 pounds per month for accepting refugees, but the new administration has reduced payments to 350 pounds.
Local authorities expressed concern that this decision could lead to a wave of homelessness among Ukrainians and put additional strain on the social housing system. A representative of the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) said that cooperation with resettlement groups is continuing to assess the impact of the cancellation of payments.
Earlier, on November 28, it was reported that the Netherlands plans to oblige Ukrainian refugees to pay rent and medical insurance fees. The government also plans to offer a special status for Ukrainians starting in March 2027, which should facilitate their return to their homeland.
