Ozon called the idea of canceling discounts on marketplaces ill-conceived
Ozon has spoken out against the initiative of five Russian banks that proposed banning marketplaces from offering discounts. On November 28, the company's press service noted that such a ban was ill-conceived and violated the principles of fair competition.
According to the retailer, such a ban will negatively affect tens of millions of Russian customers who will be forced to pay more.
"By offering to ban discounts to marketplaces, banks are introducing double standards. They believe that they can provide discounts and bonuses to their customers inside their systems, but marketplaces cannot," Ozon said in a statement.
The company noted that there are significant discounts on the Ozon platform for all customers, regardless of the payment method, and they have nothing to do with Ozon Bank. Just like banks or offline networks, marketplaces offer promotions for all customers.
On November 20, the heads of Russian banks made a proposal to ban direct discounts and bonus programs for marketplaces. At the same time, in a letter sent by them to the chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin, it is clarified that an exception is planned to be made for their own products of marketplaces and socially significant categories of goods.
In turn, Wildberries (WB) founder Tatiana Kim said on November 21 that marketplaces have always been a socially responsible business, and approval of this initiative could lead to higher inflation. Lawyer Andrey Alyoshkin noted that the initiative to ban marketplaces from using loyalty programs is illegal. On November 25, Kim warned that banning discounts would worsen the competitive environment and accelerate inflation.
