The dog handler told about the eating disorder in dogs
Vladimir Golubev, President of the Russian Cynological Federation, spoke about eating disorders in dogs.
In an interview with Radio 1 on Friday, November 28, the specialist noted that dogs that have faced hunger in the past often develop an unhealthy attitude towards food: such pets can eat more than the norm and aggressively defend food. He also warned that training for endurance before feeding is harmful — the main meal should not become an element of manipulation.
Any changes in appetite, overeating, refusal to eat, or interest in inedible items are a reason to be wary. The causes of eating disorders can be stress and post-traumatic conditions, especially if the animal previously lived in conditions of food shortage or was constantly faced with attempts to take away food. Diseases also play an important role: gastrointestinal problems, parasites, endocrine disorders or substance deficiencies can provoke abnormal eating behavior.
To avoid violations, the specialist advises to regularly show the pet to the veterinarian, follow the schedule of vaccination and treatments against parasites. It is equally important to establish a clear feeding system: observe the norm of food in grams, feed at the same time, and link the process to a calm ritual, for example, after a walk. While eating, the dog should feel safe, without fighting for resources.
The expert stressed that eating disorders are a serious condition that affects the entire body, so suspicious symptoms cannot be ignored: it is important to exclude diseases and adjust the regime by removing stressful factors and making feeding a calm, predictable part of the day.
In October, Vladimir Golubev told whether a pet should be friendly with everyone. He explained that it is impossible to change the character of a dog, but it is possible to correct undesirable manifestations.
