Every year on December 2, Russia celebrates Bank Employee Day, a professional holiday for all employees of credit and financial institutions. In 2025, it falls on a Tuesday. Izvestia tells about the history and traditions of the celebration, as well as shares sincere congratulations.

Bank Employee's Day in 2025 — the history of the holiday

The Bank Employees' Holiday was established in 2004 on the initiative of the Association of Russian Banks (ARB). The date of the celebration was not chosen by chance — on December 2, 1990, the federal laws "On the Central Bank of the Russian Federation (Bank of Russia)" and "On Banks and Banking Activities" were adopted, laying the foundation for the modern financial system of the country.

The Russian banking history dates back more than two and a half centuries. The first financial institutions appeared in the 18th century by decree of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. In 1754, she founded two loan banks, Merchant and Noble, designed to lend to different classes. Later, the authorities created a Copper bank — it was possible not only to issue a loan, but also to open a deposit. In 1786, all these organizations were liquidated, and their functions were taken over by the Unified State Loan Bank.

In the middle of the 19th century, the commercial banking sector was actively developing in Russia, and organizations focused on financing individual sectors of the economy appeared. They provided loans to individuals and businesses, which contributed to economic growth.

After the October Revolution of 1917, the Russian banking system was nationalized. All the private institutions that were part of it were abolished, and their assets were transferred to the State Bank of the RSFSR. During the NEP period (1921-1928), elements of the market economy were temporarily revived, including the creation of cooperative and commercial financial organizations, but under strict state control.

With the collapse of the USSR, another restructuring of the country's banking system took place. The privatization and liberalization of the economy began, which became the basis for the creation of a modern market banking system. Today, there are more than 300 credit institutions operating in the Russian Federation, and their activities are controlled by the Bank of Russia, a government agency with the exclusive right to issue the national currency and responsible for protecting and ensuring the stability of the ruble.

What do bank employees do?

A modern bank employee performs a wide range of duties, which vary depending on the position and level of responsibility. Key business areas include customer service, financial transactions, and administrative functions.

Main responsibilities of bank employees:

  • Customer service — product consultations, account opening and closing;
  • conducting financial transactions — transfers, payments, currency transactions;
  • administrative tasks — documentation management, preparation of reports;
  • credit analysis — assessment of applications and customer solvency;
  • Financial consulting is an aid in investment and money management.

The profession of a bank employee requires certain personal qualities and skills. Analytical skills, the ability to work with numbers and financial data are most in demand. Communication skills and customer orientation are equally important. Knowledge of modern computer programs is also welcome. These skills will be useful for working with client portals and other online platforms.

Traditions of Bank Worker's Day in Russia

The best specialists of the financial industry are awarded on the holiday. The National Banking Award, established in 2005 by the Association of Russian Banks and the National Banking Magazine, is traditionally presented in December. The winners receive a special statuette in the form of a winged lion, the prototype of which is the sculptures of griffins that adorn the famous Bank Bridge in St. Petersburg.

Many financial and credit organizations hold educational events on December 2. Seminars, lectures and round tables dedicated to current changes in the banking sector, innovations and legislative initiatives.
