The expert spoke about the reasons for the popularity of daily insurance
Almost 6 million short-term CTP policies were sold in 10 months of 2025, which is six times higher than in the entire previous year. Sergey Khudyakov, co-owner of insurance broker Mains, told Izvestia on November 29 why demand is shifting towards daily insurance and what factors are shaping a new model of insurance services consumption.
"The vast majority of short—term policies are bought by professional participants in the automobile movement - taxi drivers, they account for more than 99%. The key advantages of such a product for this category are a low entry threshold and a comfortable price, which is critically important for those who work seasonally, in shifts or are not tied to a specific car. The format of the daily installment plan is no less significant — it allows you to pay only for those days when the car is in use, without immediately depositing the full annual amount," the expert explained.
Khudyakov said that the taxi segment remains the most unprofitable for insurers due to the high intensity of car operation and increased accident rates. When calculating unprofitability, the ratio of the insurance premium and the amount of payments is critically important, and this indicator is significantly higher for professional drivers than for private car owners. The additional burden on insurers is created by high operating costs and anti-fraud procedures, as well as the risks of fraudulent actions, which is why the unprofitability of short-term policies consistently exceeds annual rates by 10-30%.
At the same time, the expert stressed that short policies are still beneficial to insurance companies, as they allow them to maintain their presence in a promising segment and expand their product line. This strategy helps to attract new customers and stimulates cross-selling, when buyers of short-term contracts are offered to issue an annual policy. He noted that such products also satisfy irregular demand, are in demand in rental, carsharing and tourists, and low commissions for digital sales can generate a steady income with a low frequency of losses.
"In fact, in the taxi segment we are witnessing a transformation of the usual model of consumption of insurance products. A similar mechanism has already allowed individual insurers to successfully enter the niche of rental insurance and CASCO. We can expect that this is just the beginning and the line of short flexible products will only expand in the future," Khudyakov concluded.
On November 26, it was reported that the system for checking the availability of CTP policies using cameras will be adjusted in such a way as to exclude false fines for the "absence" of insurance. This will allow you to avoid incorrect fines from cameras if, for one reason or another, the license plate number of the car was not specified during the registration of the policy.
