Evgenia Khasis was released from a penal colony in Mordovia
Evgenia Khasis, 40, was released from a correctional colony in Mordovia on November 28.
In 2009, she became an accomplice to one of the most notorious murders in modern Russian history. Then, with her help, lawyer and human rights activist Stanislav Markelov, who was known for acute "interethnic" court cases, was shot dead. Anastasia Baburova, a journalist who accompanied Markelov, also died: whether by accident or not remains unknown.
Both were shot by Evgenia's roommate Nikita Tikhonov. After his arrest, he was sentenced to life in prison.
Elena, in turn, received 18 years in prison as an accomplice to the crime. Later, this period was reduced to 17 years. As a result, the actual time of imprisonment was about 16 years.
The defendants were associated with the extremist "Militant Organization of Russian Nationalists" (BORN) and other nationalist movements.
