Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever has warned of the negative consequences of using frozen assets of the Russian Federation to finance Ukraine, as this will reduce the chances of a peaceful settlement of the conflict. This was reported on November 28 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.

"The Belgian Prime Minister stated that the rapid completion of the EU's plan to use frozen Russian state assets to finance Ukraine would negate the chances of a potential peace agreement," the publication said.

It is noted that the implementation of the EU plan depends on Belgium's opinion, since most of Russia's frozen assets are located in this country.

"Belgium fears that Russia may take retaliatory measures against the country, and is also concerned about the risk of prosecution in case of problems with the EU loan, since Belgium is the custodian of assets," the publication emphasized.

According to the FT, de Wever demanded that EU member states commit to cover €185 billion held in custody in the event of a failed implementation of the plan or the lifting of sanctions on Russian assets. The EU also obliged the EU to take money only for a loan.
