The Spanish Supreme Court has ordered the detention of former Transport Minister Jose Luis Abalos, who is implicated in one of the corruption scandals. This was reported on November 27 by the Reuters news agency.

The decree, which was reviewed by the newspaper, states that Abalos must be detained due to the risk of escape.

It is noted that last week, anti-corruption prosecutors announced that they were demanding 24 years in prison for Abalos. He and his assistant Coldo Garcia are accused of falsifying government contracts for the supply of medical supplies, such as protective masks, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Abalos and Garcia deny any wrongdoing, the agency said.

Earlier, on November 26, a Peruvian court sentenced former President Martin Vizcarra to 14 years in prison for corruption, finding him guilty of accepting bribes several years before taking office. It was noted that throughout the trial from October 2024, Vizcarra denied the charges, claiming that he was the victim of political persecution.
