Dermatologist warned about the dangers of cosmetic procedures at home
The popularity of cosmetic procedures at home is growing, because it is convenient, and most importantly, profitable: at least you do not have to pay for the rent of the premises. However, the apparent savings may conceal serious health risks. Dermatologist, expert doctor at the Hemotest laboratory Alexandra Fileva told Izvestia on November 28 what dangerous consequences cosmetic procedures can have at home.
The main danger lies in the fundamental lack of conditions necessary for the safe conduct of such procedures. Even the cleanest apartment cannot compare in terms of sterility with a professional cosmetology office, where strict sanitary standards are observed, bactericidal irradiators are used and surfaces are regularly treated with special disinfectants, as well as sterilization of medical instruments.
"Reusable instruments for manicure, pedicure, injections or hair removal at home are often insufficiently sterilized. Even with the use of alcoholic solutions or boiling, it is impossible to achieve the complete destruction of all pathogenic microorganisms. Hepatitis B and C viruses, HIV infection, tuberculosis and staphylococcus aureus bacteria can remain viable on poorly treated instruments," the doctor warned.
The result, she says, is not only local inflammation in the form of abscesses and phlegmon, but also systemic infections that require long-term hospital treatment.
It is especially dangerous to use injection techniques such as mesotherapy, biorevitalization, and contouring at home or in untested studios. Unskilled use of anesthetics, especially those containing adrenaline, can provoke severe allergic reactions, up to anaphylactic shock, requiring emergency resuscitation. If an incompetent technician injects the drug directly into a blood vessel, it may become blocked, followed by tissue necrosis — an embolism. There are cases of blindness after improper injection of fillers into the interbrow area, when the drug got into the vascular network of the eye and led to occlusion and ischemic complications.
Aggressive chemical peels or laser resurfacing, performed without taking into account the individual characteristics of the skin, such as its type and phototype, often lead to serious consequences: deep chemical burns, persistent hyperpigmentation and scarring. Craftsmen without proper education often do not have the necessary skills to work with professional equipment. Incorrect adjustment of the power of laser devices or an increase in the exposure time to chemicals can cause serious skin damage.
"If this happens in a certified beauty studio, an inspection will be organized after the first complaint from a dissatisfied client, and if suspicions are confirmed, the studio will be closed until violations are eliminated. The master who works at home has no deterrent factors," the specialist emphasized.
A separate problem is the use of counterfeit drugs. In pursuit of profit, unscrupulous craftsmen often use products of questionable origin that may contain toxic substances or unpredictable combinations of components. There are cases when synthetic polymers were used instead of certified hyaluronic fillers, causing chronic inflammation and granulomatous reactions, the doctor warned.
At home, with the development of acute complications such as anaphylactic shock or vascular embolism, the client is left without qualified help, and the master often does not bear any responsibility.
Plastic surgeon Sergey Karpovich told Izvestia on October 24 that injections of fillers are also dangerous. According to him, if the filler gets into the vessel, tissue necrosis may develop or even blindness may occur. The specialist emphasized that the risks can be minimized only by contacting professionals who are well versed in the anatomy and technique of drug administration.
