- Lukashenko joked about the impossibility of ex-President Bakiyev's return to Kyrgyzstan
On November 27, in Bishkek, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko joked that he would not allow Kurmanbek Bakiyev, the former president of Kyrgyzstan, to return to his homeland.
"We won't let him go to you anymore. I told him, "No more trips, that's enough! Live in Belarus." Lives normally. I sometimes visit him when he invites me. So we will not give it to you," the BelTA news agency quoted him as saying.
Bakiyev was overthrown in April 2010 and left Kyrgyzstan.
On June 11, 2023, Bakiyev was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison in Kyrgyzstan in the case of corruption at the Kumtor gold mine. It was noted that the defendants in the case are several former officials and the youngest son of the ex-president Maxim Bakiyev, whom the court sentenced to 13 years in prison with confiscation of property. Combined with another sentence, the ex-president faces 30 years in prison in his homeland.
