Latvia has proposed dismantling the railway leading to Russia
Latvia is considering the possibility of completely dismantling the railway sections leading to Russia. This was announced on November 26 by the country's President Edgars Rinkevics.
The Government plans to discuss with the national armed forces the issue of dismantling the railway line on the eastern border, as well as consult with Lithuania and Estonia on this issue.
It is specified that by the end of the year, the relevant ministries should submit their proposals, but a decision on this issue will not be announced before the beginning of 2026.
Rinkevics noted that he does not exclude any of the possible options for strengthening national defense and security, but a decision should be made only after assessing the timing, scope of work and socio-economic aspects. The President added that discussions on social media about the dismantling of railway tracks were "unnecessarily emotional and irrational."
"It's bad that there are no details and clarity, which is why the public is unnecessarily worried. They are saying something in Riga, but in Latgale they don't know about it, fears and misinformation are being created," Rinkevics said, quoted by LSM+.
Earlier, on October 15, Latvia began implementing a paid electronic queue system for citizens crossing the country's external border from Russia and Belarus. It was clarified that the introduction of a paid queue is due to the need to increase security at border crossings and prevent traffic congestion.
