The habit of delaying the alarm for another 10 minutes after waking up disrupts the morning rhythms in the body and worsens well-being. Anna Oderiy, an endocrinologist at SM Clinic, told Gazeta about this on November 27.Ru».
"Morning awakening is achieved due to the coordinated work of the endocrine and nervous systems. An hour and a half before the rise, cortisol levels gradually increase, melatonin decreases, and the sympathetic system is activated. The brain begins to "take out" the body from the night mode. When the alarm goes off, the wake—up system has almost completed its work," she said.
When a person puts off the alarm and falls asleep again, this time is not enough for proper rest, but as a result, the brain becomes disoriented, which leads to the effect of "sleep inertia". This condition is characterized by heaviness and fog in the head, as well as weakness. It usually lasts about 30 minutes, but in some cases, symptoms can be experienced two to three hours after waking up.
"The brain stops understanding at what point it needs to finally turn on. Instead of one clear wake-up signal, he gets a series of short "false starts." This increases morning cortisol levels, makes getting up harder and can affect the quality of sleep in the evening — it is more difficult for a person to fall asleep at the same time," the endocrinologist said.
A day earlier, somnologist Elena Kolesnichenko spoke about the effect of lighting on sleep. She noted that problems with falling asleep and morning drowsiness can be associated not only with stress, but also with exposure to bright evening light: it suppresses the production of melatonin and shifts the biological clock.
