- The President of Nigeria declared a state of emergency in the country and the recruitment of 20,000 new recruits
Amid increased attacks and kidnappings, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has declared a security emergency in the country, ordering the police and armed forces to recruit additional personnel to combat growing instability. This was reported on November 26 by The Punch newspaper.
"Today, given the security situation, I have decided to declare a state of emergency in the field of security throughout the country and order the recruitment of 20,000 new officers into the armed forces, bringing the total planned recruitment to 50,000," the newspaper reports the contents of the statement.
In addition, Tinubu gave permission to use the camps of the National Youth Service Corps as temporary training grounds for recruits, and also gave the Department of Public Services the authority to send trained forest guards to identify terrorists and bandits operating in the forests of Nigeria.
"This is a national emergency, and we are responding by sending more troops to areas where there are security concerns. Time requires everyone's participation. As Nigerians, we all need to participate in ensuring the security of our country," he said.
The Associated Press (AP) reported on November 22 that armed men attacked a Catholic school in the western region of Nigeria and abducted more than 200 schoolchildren and 12 teachers. According to the agency, the attackers captured 215 students, as well as 12 teachers from St. Mary's School, a Catholic institution in the Papiri community of the local government of Agwar. Daniel Atori, a representative of the state branch of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), said they were working to bring people home safely.
