Peru's ex-president Vizcarra has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for corruption.

A Peruvian court has sentenced former president Martin Vizcarra to 14 years in prison for corruption, finding him guilty of accepting bribes several years before taking office. This was reported on November 26 by the Reuters news agency.

"According to the verdict, Vizcarra received bribes equivalent to $676,000. from construction companies in exchange for public works contracts, serving as governor of the southern Moquegua region from 2011 to 2014," the article says.

It is noted that throughout the trial from October 2024, Vizcarra denied the charges, claiming that he was the victim of political persecution.

On November 9, 2020, the Peruvian parliament announced the impeachment of Vizcarra due to corruption charges. So, he was accused of accepting bribes in the amount of over $630 thousand when concluding contracts for the construction of a local hospital and another infrastructure facility.

Earlier, on September 21, 2024, former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo was sentenced to 20.5 years in prison for accepting a $35 million bribe from Odebrecht. According to the investigation, in return, the company received a tender for the construction of two sections of the Interoceanic Highway.
