The United Nations (UN) has officially started looking for a candidate for the position of the new Secretary General of the association. This was reported by Bloomberg on November 26.

It is noted that the UN Security Council and the General Assembly (GA) have formed a joint letter asking the organization's member states to nominate candidates to replace the current Secretary General Antonio Guterres after his second five-year term expires next year.

The authors of the letter urge to pay special attention to women candidates, as well as to take into account the importance of "regional diversity," the publication emphasizes.

The publication clarified that the next Secretary General will take office in January 2027.

Earlier, on October 1, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, announced Russia's plans to launch the process of selecting the UN Secretary General during its presidency of the UN Security Council. It was noted that the process of selecting and appointing the Secretary-General begins with a joint letter from the Presidents of the UN General Assembly and the Security Council.
