It is useless to strengthen the immune system during illness. Ekaterina Belova, an allergist and immunologist at the Atribeaute clinic, said this on Tuesday, November 25. The specialist dispelled the myth about the work of the immune system in acute respiratory viral infections and flu.

According to her, the immune system can be strengthened in case of illness, but this only works if a person has an immunodeficiency.

"Such a serious disease requires special, multi-stage treatment and has a number of side effects, unpleasant consequences. In this case, the risks are absolutely justified, since immunodeficiency is a dangerous condition that reduces the quality of life," the doctor said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

Belova explained that frequent colds or the presence of acute respiratory viral infections indicate the normal functioning of the immune system. And the symptoms of the disease, such as cough, runny nose and fever, just indicate the manifestation of an immune response.

"Fever suppresses the reproduction of viruses, and mucus removes pathogens from the body. All this takes time: on average, 7-10 days to recover from acute respiratory viral infections, and this is the physiological norm. In the case of normal functioning of the immune system, it is impossible and unnecessary to strengthen the immune system," the specialist said.

She added that in order to speed up the recovery process during acute respiratory viral infections, it is important to give the immune system time to deal with the virus. Maximum rest, delicious food, plenty of fluids, and fever-reducing medications will help with this.

On the same day, doctor Ekaterina Dmitrenko said that vitamin C strengthens the immune system during the cold season.

Earlier, on November 20, infectious diseases doctor Elena Meskina told in an interview with Life.Ru that for most acute respiratory viral infections and acute respiratory infections, the minimum recovery period is about a week. The doctor also drew attention to the need to provide a certificate after the child's three-day absence from kindergarten, as this helps to prevent the spread of infections in the kindergarten. 360.ru .
