NYT has learned about US plans to build housing for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip
The United States plans to build residential complexes for the resettlement of tens of thousands of Palestinians in the Israeli-controlled part of the Gaza Strip. The New York Times (NYT) writes about this on November 25.
It is noted that the complexes will consist of temporary buildings with medical facilities, schools and workplaces designed for 20-25 thousand people each. The project will be carried out in the eastern part of Gaza, while the majority of the population remains in the Hamas zone, where reconstruction work is still prohibited.
The first complex is scheduled to open in a few months in Rafah. American officials believe that the project can create jobs and partially make life easier for the population, but in the long run it does not solve the fundamental problems of the enclave.
On November 17, it was reported that, following a vote by the UN Security Council, an American draft resolution was adopted in support of US President Donald Trump's plan to establish peace in the Gaza Strip. Later, the American leader congratulated the whole world on this occasion. According to him, this project will go down in the history of the United Nations.
However, Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, said on the same day that the approved American resolution on the situation in the Gaza Strip was actually a "cat in a poke." He noted that Trump's earlier plan did not include instructions on the demilitarization of Gaza and the disarmament of local armed groups.
