- Lukashenko called Lithuania's actions on the border "stupidity at the political level"
On November 25, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko called the actions of the Lithuanian authorities in the situation on the border "stupidity at the political level."
"People see who is right and who is to blame. <...> This stupidity was at the political level," BelTA quoted the head of Belarus as saying.
He stressed that the Lithuanian authorities create artificial obstacles to the movement of heavy trucks across the border with Belarus, which negatively affects transport operations in the region.
Lukashenko noted that such actions not only disrupt the normal functioning of transport logistics, but also demonstrate the short-sightedness of Lithuanian politicians. According to him, the situation on the border requires constructive dialogue and mutual respect for the interests of all parties involved in transport links between the countries.
Lithuania completely closed the border with Belarus on October 29, then exceptions were made only for diplomatic workers, transit traffic to Kaliningrad, as well as those people who have Lithuanian and EU citizenship. After this decision was made, it became known that about 5,000 Lithuanian trucks were blocked on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border, which, as reported by the State Customs Committee of Belarus on November 1, would be able to return only after the borders were opened.
Later, on November 19, Lithuanian Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovich announced that Lithuania was ready to reopen the border, and the next day the Belarusian state border committee received an official notification. On November 22, the Council of Ministers of Belarus announced that trailers and semi-trailers with Lithuanian registration were allowed to move around the republic.
