- The Governor of St. Petersburg and the President of Cuba discussed issues of cooperation
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez and St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov discussed cooperation in education, science, healthcare, digitalization and cultural heritage preservation at a meeting in the northern capital.
"Every time we visit the hospitable Cuban land, we feel that we have come to visit our most reliable friends. You and the President of Russia continue to strengthen fraternal relations between our countries. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin stressed that the long—term, allied nature of our cooperation has been going on for several decades," Beglov said.
Cuban schoolchildren visited St. Petersburg this summer as part of cooperation in the field of education and youth policy. They took part in the alumni celebration "Scarlet Sails". Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, in turn, invited the children from St. Petersburg to relax at the Wonders of Childhood camp in Varadero. The Northern capital also invited Cuban graduates to study at local colleges within the quota allocated by the Government of the Russian Federation in the most demanded technical and engineering specialties in Cuba.
In August of this year, St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and the Technological University of Havana received a grant from the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education for a joint project to ensure Cuba's energy security. Within its framework, scientists will create an intelligent model for the operation of energy systems in extreme climatic conditions.
Connections in healthcare and in the field of digital technologies are also expanding. By the new academic year, St. Petersburg has supplied digital equipment to schools in Havana for Russian language classes. "I would like to emphasize the successful cooperation in the preservation of cultural heritage. In November last year, a Memorandum on cooperation between relevant authorities in this area was signed. The work has intensified. In summer, a delegation led by the President of the National Council for Cultural Heritage of Cuba took part in the Restoration Week in St. Petersburg," said Beglov.
