On November 30, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Day of St. Gregory the Wonderworker, Bishop of Neocaesarea. In 2025, the celebration falls on a Sunday. In the national calendar, the holiday is called Gregory the Winter Designator. Read about its history, traditions, signs and prohibitions in the Izvestia article.

What is the church holiday on November 30th?

St. Gregory the Wonderworker was born in the 3rd century in the city of Neocaesarea into a pagan family. Having received a brilliant education, he searched for the Truth from a young age, but could not find it in the teachings of the ancient philosophers. Revelation came to him through the Holy Gospel, after which the young man converted to Christianity.

To continue his studies, Saint Gregory went to Alexandria, which at that time was a major center of both pagan and Christian scholarship. He became a student of Prester Origen, a famous teacher with deep knowledge. Saint Gregory spent eight years studying with Origen and was baptized by him.

The saint's ascetic lifestyle aroused the envy of his pagan peers. One day, when Gregory was talking with a friend in the town square, a well-known harlot approached him and demanded payment for the alleged sin committed with her. At first, he meekly objected to her, but then asked a friend to give her the money. As soon as the harlot received the "payment", she had a fit of madness, after which she confessed to the deception. Gregory prayed over her, and the demon left her.

Returning to Neocaesaria, the saint abandoned his secular career and retired to the desert. In solitude, fasting and prayer, he achieved spiritual perfection and received from God the gift of foresight. Bishop Fedim of Amasia, having learned about Gregory's righteous life, decided to appoint him bishop of Neo-Caesarea. The ascetic was hiding from the messengers, and then Bishop Fedim performed an unprecedented act — he ordained Gregory in absentia. The saint accepted this as the will of God and did not resist.

Before his ordination, Gregory prayed fervently, asking for the true way of worshipping the Holy Trinity to be revealed to him. Then the Mother of God appeared to him with the Apostle John the Theologian, who taught him the proper confession of this mystery. The Revelation recorded by the saint became the basis of the doctrine of the Holy Trinity in Orthodox theology and was approved by the First Ecumenical Council in 325.

After becoming bishop, Gregory proved himself to be a miracle worker. He cast out demons, healed the sick, moved mountains with His word, and tamed the floods of rivers. During the persecution under Emperor Decius, he hid his flock on the mountain, making them invisible to the soldiers by prayer. Thanks to his work, the number of Christians in Neocaesaria increased significantly: if there were only 17 Christians in the city when he entered the pulpit, then only 17 pagans remained before the death of the saint.

Traditions of the national holiday Grigory Zimokazatel on November 30

In the Russian folk tradition, St. Gregory's memorial day was named the Winter Designator. By this time, snow cover had already been established in most regions, which allowed for the rite of "winter setting". Villagers of all ages gathered for sledding and tumbling in the snow. There was a belief that the further you could drive, the harsher the winter would be, but the happier and more productive the next year would be.

An important tradition of the day was a visit to the sauna. It was believed that bathing procedures help to gain strength, wash away old resentments, sorrows and failures.

The holiday was supposed to be held with the family. With the exception of daytime festivities, they tried not to go out once again — they believed that after sunset they could encounter evil spirits. Evenings were spent having a family tea party with a samovar. The treats corresponded to the Christmas fast: there were water tortillas, herbal teas, honey and homemade jam on the table.

What not to do on November 30 on the holiday of Gregory the Winter Designator

The Orthodox Church does not set any special prohibitions for this day, but believers should remember to continue the Christmas fast. During this period, meat, dairy products and eggs are excluded, but the consumption of fish and seafood is allowed.

In the folk tradition, various prohibitions and superstitions were associated with Gregory the Winter Pointer. During the holiday, they tried not to raise their voices at older relatives, so as not to bring illness and financial losses on the family.

What else can't be done on November 30th:

  • quarreling with loved ones, especially with spouses — even a minor altercation can turn into a big scandal.;

  • Going on the road leads to trouble on the way;

Folk signs for November 30th

The popular name of the holiday, the Winter Pointer— directly indicates its main purpose in the peasant calendar. It was believed that the weather before lunch indicated the first half of winter, and after noon — the second.

  • cold weather leads to a harsh winter;
  • The new moon in the sky is ready for frosts.;
