China is striving to achieve independence from geopolitical instability by diversifying the country's energy mix. Igor Sechin, Executive Secretary of the Presidential Commission for the Development Strategy of the Fuel and Energy Complex, Chief Executive Officer of Rosneft, expressed confidence in this.

"The challenges facing China's economy create the need to diversify the country's energy mix, aimed at achieving independence from geopolitical instability and related risks," Sechin said at the opening of the VII Russian-Chinese Energy Business Forum (RCEBF) in Beijing.

He quoted Chinese President Xi Jinping: "China needs to hold an energy bowl of rice in its hands." According to Sechin, partnership in this area is one of the priorities of Russia and China.

The head of Rosneft stressed that the coal sector is gaining a second wind today. "Last year, China issued permits for the construction of about 100 GW of new coal generation. Unlike many Western countries, China is well aware that alternative energy can only complement traditional energy, but not replace it," said the executive secretary of the Fuel and Energy Complex Commission. At the same time, Russia provides more than a quarter of China's coal imports, he added.

According to Sechin, cooperation between the two countries in the gas sector is also developing dynamically — the share of the Russian Federation in supplies to China is more than 20%. Today, China has also become a recognized global leader in renewable energy. Thus, in recent years, the country has introduced the largest volume of new capacities and is home to more than 70% of the world's production of equipment for the "green" economy.
