A researcher from the National Agency for Research and Innovation (BRIN) from the Joko Ridho Vitono Center for Biosystematics and Evolutionary Research presented data on the flowering of a rare plant, Rafflesia hasseltii, in western Sumatra, Indonesia. This was announced by BRIN on its official website.

"In Sijunjung district, West Sumatra, a team has successfully documented a flowering Rafflesia hasseltii flower in a forest area," the publication says.

It is noted that this is one of the special cases, since the flower bloomed not in a protected area, but in a natural environment.

"The emotional video then went viral on social media and drew public attention to the importance of preserving this rare flora," the agency added.

This discovery was part of a joint study by BRIN, the University of Bengkulu and the Kulkulu Rare Pupfish Care Community within the framework of the First Regional Rafflesia Panphylogeny project, aimed at reconstructing the phylogenetic relationships of all rafflesia species in Southeast Asia.

Earlier, on November 4, a rare vampire orchid, Dracula chimaera, bloomed in the botanical garden of the Moscow State University "Aptekarsky Ogorod" in Moscow. The plant is native to Colombia and Ecuador, where it grows in mountain forests. The flowers reach up to 22.5 cm wide and range in color from red-brown to pale yellow.
