The Russian flag was lowered at the headquarters of the International Football Federation (FIFA) in Zurich in memory of the Olympic champion in the USSR national football team, ex-striker of the Spartak football club Nikita Simonyan. This was announced on November 24 by the press service of the Russian Football Union (RFU).
"Such a gesture of respect is a rare case that highlights Simonyan's place in the history of European and world football," the Telegram channel said.
It is also noted that back in 200, the athlete was awarded the FIFA Order of Merit, which was awarded for his contribution to the development of football games.
Earlier in the day, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that Simonyan was a football legend and an idol for fans. He also expressed his condolences to the relatives and the family of the football player.
Simonyan died on November 23 at the age of 99. It was noted that the man felt unwell on November 20, after which he was hospitalized. The farewell ceremony for the ex-Spartak striker will take place on November 27 at the Lukoil Arena.
