- The Lithuanian authorities called the opening of the border with Belarus a hasty decision.
The Lithuanian authorities rushed to open the border with Belarus. This was announced on November 24 by the adviser to the Lithuanian President Asta Skaisgirite.
"We probably should have taken the time to open the border and linked this step with clearer conditions," she said in an interview with Lithuanian radio station LRT.
The adviser believes that such conditions as the passage of Lithuanian trucks across the border and the absence of air probes on the territory of the country were not put forward.
Skysgirite stressed that a dialogue between both sides is necessary to de-escalate the situation.
Lithuania completely closed the border with Belarus on October 29, then exceptions were made only for diplomatic workers, transit traffic to Kaliningrad, as well as those people who have Lithuanian and EU citizenship. After this decision was made, it became known that about 5,000 Lithuanian trucks were blocked on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border, which, as reported by the State Customs Committee of Belarus on November 1, would be able to return only after the borders were opened.
Later, on November 19, Lithuanian Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovich announced that Lithuania was ready to reopen the border, and the next day the Belarusian state border committee received an official notification. On November 22, the Council of Ministers of Belarus announced that trailers and semi-trailers with Lithuanian registration were allowed to move around the republic.
