The State Duma warned Lithuania about the consequences of blocking Kaliningrad
According to military doctrine, the blocking of any Russian subject, including the Kaliningrad Region, is interpreted as an actual declaration of war. This was announced on November 23 by State Duma Deputy Andrei Kolesnik.
In conversation with Lenta.ru Kolesnik noted that Lithuania, which is a key transit corridor to Kaliningrad, itself depends on revenue from this transit and the sale of agricultural products. According to him, Vilnius' policy looks contradictory, since transit restrictions will primarily harm Lithuania itself.
The MP warned that in the event of a blockade of the Kaliningrad region, Lithuania could "burst like a balloon," bearing in mind the vulnerability of the republic's economy.
"If transit is closed and the Kaliningrad region is blocked, Lithuania itself may burst, like this notorious balloon. Actually, this country is a balloon," he said.
Kolesnik also regarded recent statements by the Lithuanian authorities as an attempt to "cheer up" himself.
The head of the ruling Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (SDPL), Mindaugas Sinkevicius, said yesterday that Vilnius may consider restricting transit to Kaliningrad if Lithuanian trucks, currently unable to leave the territory of Belarus due to Lithuania's closure of borders, are not released. The politician noted that his state may also introduce other measures, in particular, once again decide to close the borders with Belarus. He stressed that the details of Vilnius' response to the allegedly detained Lithuanian cars would not be disclosed, as Minsk could monitor the development of this situation.
Lithuania completely closed the border with Belarus on October 29, then exceptions were made only for diplomatic workers, transit traffic to Kaliningrad, as well as those people who have Lithuanian and EU citizenship. After this decision was made, it became known that about 5,000 Lithuanian trucks were blocked on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border, which, as reported by the State Customs Committee of Belarus on November 1, would be able to return only after the borders were opened.
Later, on November 19, Lithuanian Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovich announced that Lithuania was ready to reopen the border, and the next day the Belarusian state border committee received an official notification. On November 22, the Council of Ministers of Belarus announced that trailers and semi-trailers with Lithuanian registration were allowed to move around the republic.
