The Times noted the warm welcome of New York Mayor Mamdani Trump
The new mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, was unexpectedly warmly received at the White House on November 21, and US President Donald Trump did not criticize him as he had previously criticized the presidents of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, and South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa. The Times newspaper writes about this on November 22.
"President Trump's meeting in the Oval Office with Zohran Mamdani should have turned into a real clash. They've spent the last few months publicly insulting each other. However, when Mamdani arrived at the Oval Office, he managed to avoid the same criticism that President of Ukraine [Vladimir] Zelensky and President of South Africa [Cyril] Ramaphosa were subjected to during their visits," the article says.
The publication emphasizes that instead the meeting was full of compliments. Trump spoke about their shared views, despite disagreements over police work and Mamdani's tax plans. According to the author of the article, such a "love bombardment" was not unexpected, since Trump "has long admired winners" — those who have supporters and who win elections.
Such a warm welcome also speaks to the political background. Some representatives of the US presidential administration see Mamdani as a "communist scarecrow" against whom they can campaign in the midterm elections. At the same time, others say that he is underestimated "at his own risk."
Mamdani himself "tried his best not to come into conflict with the president." As the "compliments got louder," Mamdani sometimes felt uncomfortable, the newspaper writes.
Mamdani won the New York City election on November 5. As Bloomberg noted on the same day, this vote was one of a series of major political victories won by the Democratic Party in recent times.
On November 3, Trump announced that he could limit federal funding to New York, with the exception of the most necessary minimum, if Mamdani wins the mayoral election. He stressed that he would prefer to see a Democratic mayor who "achieved success" rather than "a communist without experience and with a reputation for complete failure." Later, on November 5, the head of the White House called Mamdani's victory in the elections a loss of US sovereignty.
