German residents are refusing to drink beer en masse, which has led to the bankruptcy and closure of breweries across the country. The New York Times writes about this on November 22.

"The Einbecker brewery, founded more than 600 years ago in central Germany, has survived fires, famines, two epidemics of plague and four devastating wars, maintaining its existence due to the constant demand for its strong bock-style lagers. Now the brewery is facing perhaps the biggest threat: the Germans have started drinking much less beer," the article says.

According to the publication, alcohol consumption in Germany has been declining for several decades. However, "the sudden and accelerating drop took brewers and bar owners by surprise." Of the approximately 1,500 breweries in Germany, more than 50 have closed in 2025.

According to experts, Germans are increasingly taking care of their health in the same way as many members of the younger generation in the United States and other countries.

"Young people drink alcohol much more consciously and intelligently than our generation," said Holger Eichele, president of the German Brewers Association.

Germans also leave home less often due to the high cost of living, and sobriety has become the norm.

Earlier, on July 3, Heinrich Mayer, head of the BarthHaas reports project, told Izvestia that German beer is losing its importance due to a significant decrease in the production of foamy drinks in Germany. According to the latest data, not a single German brewery made it into the top twenty of the rating. According to Mayer, the decline in production among German beer producers will continue.
