The project to upgrade the powertrains of Lada cars is proceeding according to plan, with a three-year implementation period. The new naturally aspirated engines will be used first on Lada Azimut, then on other models of the brand. This was announced on the sidelines of the forum "Transport of Russia" by the head of AVTOVAZ Maxim Sokolov, reports TASS on November 21.

According to Sokolov, Lada will have a new range of naturally aspirated engines with a volume of 1.6 liters and 1.8 liters, with a capacity of 120 hp and 132 hp, respectively. The powertrain upgrade project has been underway since last year with the support of the Industrial Development Fund.

AvtoVAZ is considering turbocharged engines and classic automatic transmissions as part of partner projects due to small volumes for future Lada models, the top manager noted.

The Lada Azimut crossover was first introduced in June this year at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). One of the main and unusual features of the model was the electric heating of the front side windows.

Earlier, on November 10, it became known that AvtoVAZ had put its first Lada crossover to the test. Full-scale tests of the Azimut model are one of the key stages in preparing the model for the start of mass production, scheduled for 2026.
