- Kravtsov pointed out the growing interest in natural science subjects among schoolchildren
In Russia, there is an increase in interest among students in natural science subjects. This was announced on November 21 by the Minister of Education of the Russian Federation Sergey Kravtsov at the Forum of Teachers of Natural Science subjects.
According to the ministry, in 2024-2025, 800 thousand students are studying at the advanced level of the program, which is 41% more than in the previous academic year.
"We see that the students are interested in natural science subjects in an in-depth study. In physics, there are about 300 thousand students from grades 7 to 11 at the advanced level, in chemistry — 215 thousand, in biology — more than 300 thousand. Since the 2024-2025 academic year, there has been an increase in the number of participants choosing natural science subjects for the unified State Exam," Kravtsov said.
Thus, 9.4% more students chose physics for the Unified State Exam compared to the previous academic year. Chemistry — 6.3%, biology — 5.6%, said the head of the department.
"That is, we have already reversed the trend when everyone wanted to be lawyers and economists, although these are also very important professions, very necessary professions. At our college, 54% of students are enrolled in engineering and natural science programs. In other words, colleges began to develop and focus on the demands of the economy, support for technological leadership," said the head of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation.
The event was organized on the initiative of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation in cooperation with the Russian Society "Znanie" and the V.S. Lednev Institute of Educational Content and Methods.
The Ministry of Education plans to develop unified textbooks for all school subjects by 2028. The relevant initiative was discussed on October 16 at an expanded meeting of the Committee on Science, Education and Culture in the Federation Council. Kravtsov noted that the rights to all state textbooks will belong to the department, which will also be fully responsible for the materials provided to the press.
President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Krasnikov, during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 15, announced that the Russian Academy of Sciences had agreed with the Ministry of Education to create unified school textbooks on natural sciences. In accordance with this plan, the departments want to create unified textbooks in mathematics, physics, computer science, chemistry, biology for general and secondary general education. It is planned that the editions will appear on September 11, 2027.
