Finland has proposed restoring marshes on the border with Russia for safety
The Finnish government is considering restoring drained marshes on the border with Russia for security purposes. This was reported on November 20 by the Yle portal, citing sources.
"Light armored vehicles can overcome some of the swamps in summer, but for heavy equipment and wheeled vehicles, driving through the swamps is a serious obstacle," Pekka Toveri, a former tank brigade commander and European parliamentarian from the Coalition Party, said in an interview with the portal.
However, Juho Hyanninen from the Metsä-Lappi Forestry Association doubts the military benefits of the idea. According to him, swamps can freeze in winter and it is possible to easily drive through, the winter period lasts about six months in this region.
The Yle portal reported on November 17 that artillery exercises involving more than 2,000 military personnel and 500 pieces of equipment began in northern Finland, 100 km from the Russian border. The exercise, called Northern Strike 225, will be held at the largest Rowayarvi training ground in Western Europe in Lapland until November 25.
