- Zakharova accused NATO of wanting to limit Russian maritime shipments through the Baltic
NATO seeks to limit maritime cargo transportation as much as possible in the interests of Russia through the Baltic Sea. This was announced on November 20 by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova.
"NATO has long dreamed of turning the Baltic Sea into its internal water area, completely isolating Russia. They don't hide these plans much. However, their plans are not destined to come true," Zakharova said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to her, for this purpose, the alliance launched the Baltic Sentry mission in 2025. Zakharova added that at the same time, Russia will remain a full member of the Baltic community.
In addition, the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed to the active militarization of the region by NATO. Also, the countries of the alliance do not demonstrate openness to discussing ways of de-escalation, she noted.
Earlier, on November 13, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that the Baltic Sea had allegedly practically become an internal NATO sea in recent years. According to him, Russia also continues to be active in the same waters.
On October 20, Sergei Naryshkin, head of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), announced that British intelligence was preparing new sabotage operations in the Baltic and Black Seas against partners in the European Union (EU). According to him, European intelligence agencies are transferring the experience of political assassinations and terrorist acts to the EU space.
