Five high-speed highways to be built in Russia by 2045
Five high-speed highways (HSR) will be built in Russia by 2045, and their length will exceed 4.5 thousand km. This was announced on November 19 by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Saveliev.
It is specified that there are plans to connect Moscow with Ryazan, Yekaterinburg, Adler and Minsk. And, of course, one of the large—scale projects is the high-speed railway between the capital and St. Petersburg. The journey there will be reduced to 2 hours and 15 minutes, and trains will run every 15 minutes during rush hour.
"As a country, we have now joined the top naval development league in the world. It is an indisputable fact that highways have multiple effects on both the country's economy and technological breakthrough. And, of course, for us, for our industry, this is a technological breakthrough, and therefore our technological independence, our technological sovereignty," Saveliev said.
This was discussed at the Transport of Russia exhibition and forum, which is currently taking place in Moscow.
According to Andrey Nikitin, Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, Russia ranks first in terms of the number of icebreaking fleets, and the volume of traffic along the Northern Sea Route has already exceeded the figures of the Soviet Union by three times.
Earlier, on October 2, the head of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov announced that the assembly of the first wagons for the Russian high-speed train will begin in the first months of 2026. He also stressed that the design and production of rolling stock is carried out on the basis of domestic technologies. Every element of a high-speed train, including trolleys and braking systems, is unique, Belozerov concluded.
Prior to that, on September 20, RBC reported that the Moscow –St. Petersburg high-speed rail project assumes the presence of 16 stations. Two of them will be technical — Tigoda in Novgorod and Gorki in Tver regions. The remaining 14 stops will become passenger stops. Trains will stop at such stations as Leningradsky Railway Station, Rizhskaya, Petrovsko-Razumovskaya, Zelenograd-Kryukovo, Vysokovo, Novaya Tver, Logovezh, Sadva, Vypolzovo, Valdai, Veliky Novgorod, Zharovskaya, Yuzhny and St. Petersburg Main.
