Olympic champion in cross-country skiing Alevtina Olyunina died at the age of 84. This was reported on November 19 on the portal of government agencies of the Kostroma region.

The governor of the region, Sergey Sitnikov, expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the athlete, noting that she devoted her life to sports and was a strong-willed, purposeful person, being an example for the younger generation.

Olyunina won a gold medal at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo in the 3x5 km relay and a silver in the 10 km individual medley.

She became the first athlete from the Kostroma region to be awarded Olympic medals, as well as a two-time world champion.
