- The State Duma announced the complete replacement of YouTube with Russian services in the near future.
Russian platforms will completely replace YouTube video hosting in the domestic market in the medium term. This was announced on November 19 by Anton Gorelkin, deputy head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy.
"YouTube came to our market in the 2010s and took a dominant monopoly position in the video hosting market. Today we are trying to fix this situation, we are developing our analogues and we are confident that in the medium term we will completely replace YouTube, which, unfortunately, has become a propaganda weapon," he said in an interview with TASS.
The MP stressed that digital sovereignty requires significant investments and qualified personnel, and the understanding of the need to develop Russian digital platforms came back in 2014 after the introduction of the first sanctions.
On May 30, Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy and federal coordinator of the Digital Russia party project, announced that YouTube would be able to return to full-fledged work in the Russian Federation if it fulfilled a number of certain conditions. He pointed out that the platform needs to pay fines and form an official legal representation in Russia.
