Berlin has supported a French initiative aimed at reducing the dependence of the European Union (EU) on foreign IT giants. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on November 18.

"We want to speak with one European voice and work together to achieve one goal: European digital sovereignty," the newspaper quoted German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who delivered a speech at the European digital sovereignty summit in Berlin.

According to the publication, the head of the German government supported the French concept of strengthening digital sovereignty, which implies priority support by European industry leaders to reduce dependence on the United States. Previously, Berlin's policy focused "on stimulating innovation without severing important trade links."

As part of this initiative, Berlin and Paris supported Brussels' call to include the largest players in the cloud computing market, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft, in the scope of European antitrust regulation. The European Commission also announced the launch of investigations into these two services in accordance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which could be a "direct blow to the American giants."

Merz stressed that the disruptions in the work of large American technology companies and the massive shortage in the chip industry have shown Europeans their dependence on foreign digital technologies, which are "used for political purposes."

On September 5, US President Donald Trump said that Washington would not leave unanswered the decision of the European Union to fine Google for $ 3.5 billion. According to him, such actions are "unfair" and infringe on the interests of American companies. He also recalled the $17 billion fine previously imposed on Apple and promised to take action.
