The administration of US President Donald Trump rejected the offer of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to leave his post in a few years, at the same time the White House began informal negotiations with Caracas. The New York Times (NYT) writes about this on November 19, citing anonymous sources.

"He (Trump. — ed.) authorized a new round of informal negotiations, which at some point led to the fact that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro offered to resign in a few years, which was rejected by the White House," the article says.

Also, according to sources, Trump approved the CIA's plans to conduct covert operations in Venezuela, which may be "aimed at preparing the basis for further actions."

According to the newspaper, it is still unclear what exactly the covert operations are and when they can be implemented. The author of the article suggested that the next action of the United States against the Venezuelan authorities could be some kind of cyber operation, psychological or informational impact.

On November 16, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Maduro of leading the Los Soles drug cartel and stated that the State Department intends to recognize the group as a foreign terrorist organization.

Prior to that, on November 14, Maduro noted that the American people needed to unite with Venezuela to establish peace in the Americas. The statement came amid strained relations between the two countries following the deployment of U.S. warships in the Caribbean, which Caracas regards as an attempt at regime change.
