- The expert expressed his opinion about Christian Schmidt's resignation in early 2026.
Christian Schmidt, the High Representative of the International Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), will most likely leave his post in January-February 2026. This opinion was expressed by Milan Lazovich, a Balkanist and program manager of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), at the Izvestia News Center during a round table on the topic: "Bosnia and Herzegovina 30 years after the conclusion of the Dayton Accords."
"Christian Schmidt will leave his position, probably at the beginning of next year — January-February 2026. But at the same time, as reported in the media, this does not mean the complete abolition of this institution, the office of the high Representative," he said.
According to Lazovich, there is a possibility that someone else will take the position and it is also likely that this candidacy will be coordinated in compliance with all necessary procedures in the UN Security Council.
In addition, the Balkanist drew attention to the fact that the candidate will have to receive the approval of all members of the UN Security Council, including Russia and China.
During the meeting with the head of the RS, Lavrov called the events in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) evidence of the West's gross interference in the internal affairs of the republic. He also drew attention to the fact that the current "so-called high representative" of the United Nations in BiH, Christian Schmidt, was appointed to the post by illegal methods. According to Lavrov, he is trying to carry out "usurping functions" on the orders of representatives of Western countries.
